The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) is responsible for the development of the Australian Curriculum from Kindergarten to Year 12.

Business Educators Australasia (BEA) has met a number of times with ACARA to discuss the development of the business and economics learning areas in the Australian Curriculum and have beenadvised that economics and business education will be included in Phase 3 in the development process.

BEA expects to gain additional details about what this will actually entail and further information, as soon as available will be placed on the BEA website soon (around August, 2010 is anticipated).

The BEA website will provide affiliates (including VCTA members) with developments as they occur.

Phase 1: English, mathematics, science and history

Phase 1 drafts are available for K-10 curriculum for the learning areas of English, mathematics, science and history. Feedback closed on 23 May 2010.

If timelines are met, it is expected that the Australian curriculum for these four learning areas in P-10 years will be available from 2011, however this is to be confirmed.

The senior curriulum for these learning areas will be available for consultation between April and June 2010.

In the same memo, VCAA states

"At this stage, it is expected that current VCE studies that substantially duplicate the new Australian curriculum subjects will be replaced by the new Australian curriculum subjects. There are no current plans to discontinue any VCE studies other than those covered by the new Australian curriculum subjects".

It is understood that VET and VCAL will continue to be offered as parallel senior secondary certificates.

Phase 2: languages, geography and the arts

Work has begun to develop the Australian curriculum for languages, geography and the arts.

What each learning area will actually contain is not specified at this point in time. The Ministerial Council on Education, Early Childhood Development and Youth Affairs (MCEECDYA) has requested ACARA to provide advice about curriculum development for Phase 3 learning areas as identified in the Melbourne Declaration on Educational Goals for Young Australians.
