New: ACCC small business resource - cons & fin literacy plus!

A new resource for small businesses has just been released (mid April) by the ACCC.

A free online education program for small businesses has been developed to help them learn about their rights and obligations under Australian competition and consumer laws. While the resource is designed for small business, teachers will find it handy to use with students in Year 9 and 10 when focusing on consumer and financial literacy.

The program is a simple, interactive learning resource which provides a broad overview of the key provisions of the Competition and Consumer Act 2010. It includes 10 modules covering topics such as pricing, advertising, consumer rights, selling safe products, unlawful competition and scams.

Each module should take about 15 minutes to complete. Users can work through the entire set of modules, or select only those topics most relevant to them. At the end of most modules, users can do a short self-assessment quiz to test their understanding of the topic.

The free online education program for small business is available at www.ccaeducationprograms.org

The LEAP Program aims to demystify the links between school, university and professions.

LEAP seeks to encourage secondary students from low SES communities in Victoria to consider higher education as a future option through a focus on the professions.
Activities have two main foci:

Consumer Affairs Student Filmfest

Did you know that the 2013 Consumer Stuff Film Fest is now underway? The Film Fest provides teachers with a great way to engage young learners, to work collaboratively, or independently on a short film, while meeting curriculum outcomes.

It’s also a great way for young people to let Consumer Affairs Victoria know what they think of consumer issues important to them. As, in previous years, there are great prizes to be won, and all participating students will receive a certificate of participation.

You can get further details at our Consumer Stuff Film Fest page.

Registering your interest does not commit you to submit a film (of course, we hope you do) but enables me to keep in touch with you and provide support throughout the year.

Consumer Affairs Victoria also have some new resources available for teachers, including the first e-newsletter for teachers - Consumer Classroom, which is published bimonthly. To receieve Consumer Classroom, you need to subscribe to Consumer Classroom at via the email updates page, if you haven't already done so.

Consumer Affairs Victoria have also created an online Teachers calendar. The Teachers calendar highlights significant days and events throughout the year and may be of assistance to teachers in planning the inclusion of consumer education in their curriculum. CAV will be adding to the calendar throughout the year.

CAV also offer teachers free access to download our teacher resources, which are all aligned to the Victorian secondary school curriculum.
