This student resource examines the relationship between economic growth and ecological sustainability, business ethics and government responses in relation to the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
A study of the BP oil spill relates to the Economics, Geography and Civics and Citizenship domains of the Victorian Essential Learning Standards at Level 6. Opportunities for learning in the Economics domain in relation to this topic include a study of the connection between economic growth and ecological sustainability, what it means to be an ethical producer, and the role of values in economic decision-making. Learning opportunities in the Geography domain include an investigation of the effects of human activities on the environment and the impact of development-related projects such BP’s Deepwater Horizon oil well in the Gulf of Mexico. Opportunities for learning in the Civics and Citizenship domain include an examination of government responses to issues of environmental sustainability and activities that promote greater engagement with the community.
