Welcome to Issue 5 of Compak for 2010.
July 2010
In this fifth edition of Compak Gillian Somers discusses examples of the promotion component of the marketing mix and a significant ethical issue relating to the use of advertising. This resource includes student activities based on The Gruen Transfer, a popular ABC television program about advertising and how it works. Also included is the second of two sample assessment tasks for Outcome 1 in Unit 4.
For VCE Business Management Unit 4, the Fair Work Ombudsman website provides a number of useful videos.
In the past, there has been much confusion about what VCE students need to know in terms of employee relations. Often teachers ask whether students need to know about legislative changes. The Advice for Teachers section of the VCE Business Management study design (pages 35–36) states that students are expected to:
- know and be able to discuss the similarities and differences between centralised and decentralised employee relations, including key characteristics, advantages and disadvantages
- have a basic knowledge of industry-wide awards, collective agreements and individual contracts
- have an understanding of the role of human resource managers in employee relations, and the styles and skills they need to resolve conflict under a decentralised system.
Note that an overly legalistic or deep understanding of previous, current and future legislation in the area of employee relations is neither encouraged nor desired.
