Welcome to the first edition of Compak for 2012 and we look forward to working with you this year. Hope you are feeling refreshed and ready to go! I wish to extend thanks to Sasha Mildenhall who in recent years has co-edited Compak Accounting with me. Fortunately, Sasha will still contribute activities to Compak this year as well as taking on other tasks across a range of VCTA services. Thank you Sasha! Thanks also go to Vicki Baron who greatly assists by casting an eye over activities before we publish. And thank you so much to all valued contributors.

Investigation: going into business

In this investigation, students research what is required to be a successful small business owner and prepare a report. This is an assessment task that is designed to meet the requirements of Outcome 1 in VCE Accounting Unit 1.

Theory questions for Unit 3: ‘discuss’ versus ‘explain’

This student resource consists of five theory questions based on Unit 3 of the reaccredited VCE Accounting Study Design (2012–2016). From 2012 there is greater emphasis on higher order questioning using words such as ‘discuss’, ‘interpret’ and ‘evaluate’, as a result of changes to the key skills.

This organisation was chosen as the basis for a case study because of recent media coverage relating to the closure of manufacturing plants in regional Victoria, NSW and Queensland.

Australia’s two-speed economy: Unit 1 assessment task

In Area of Study 1 of VCE Legal Studies Unit 3 students consider the role of individuals and groups in influencing a change in the law and the means by which they influence legislative change. This case study focuses on the action taken by individuals and groups to influence parliament to change the laws on puppy farming and why change in these laws is needed.

In Area of Study 1 of VCE Legal Studies Unit 3, students consider the reasons why laws may need to change and the influence of individuals and groups in bringing about legislative change. They also examine the principles underpinning the Australian parliamentary system.

Sample assessment tasks for Unit 3

The following sample assessment tasks are designed to assess the outcomes for VCE Legal Studies Unit 3, based on the current Study Design (2011–2015). Outcome 1 is assessed using two folio exercises. Outcome 2 is assessed by two sets of structured questions. For Outcome 3 students are required to complete an essay.

Piracy on the high seas—separating fact from fiction

The focus of this student resource is maritime piracy, a significant and growing global problem given that around 80 per cent of world trade is transported by sea. Students will compare and contrast the so-called ‘Golden Age of Piracy’ with maritime piracy today, assess the economic costs including the impact on living standards, and explore possible ways to tackle this problem.

Crime and punishment: how sentencing works and do judges get it right?

The media and the public are often not shy about commenting on the sentences handed down to offenders in serious criminal cases. Usually this comes in the form of criticism about the offender receiving an inappropriately lenient sentence. How much focus does the media place on the full circumstances of such cases though? This resource explores how judges are required to reach a sentence in each case.
